After being betrayed by her chemist, Ebonyi woman remanded in prison for the death of her abandoned baby
20-year-old Ebonyi woman, Favour Igboji, has been remanded in prison by an Abakiliki Magistrate Court for the death of her baby.
According to Punch, Favour gave birth to a baby girl and abandoned it at a farm because she couldn’t care for it. The infant was later found dead by a farmer.
Favour’s ordeal started after she got pregnant and her partner fled. The pregnant 20-year-old visited a nearby chemist and requested for an abortion drug, but the chemist deceptively gave her
vitamins, saying that it would ‘dissolve’ the baby gradually. But the baby reached full term. Favour gave birth to a baby girl and her placenta all by herself. She then used a razor blade to nip the umbilical cord, before abandoning the child at the farm.
Speaking to the court, the Prosecutor Inspector Ramson Egenkeonye said:
“Police investigation reveals that Favour Igboji during her pregnancy engaged the services of a Chemist shop owner to help her terminate the pregnancy.
The Chemist shop owner gave the accused mother baby nourishing drugs, instead of abortion drugs, and promised her that taking the drugs would make the unborn baby dissolve gradually, however the baby continued to grow in the womb.”
The accused went to the bush with a razor blade with which she cut off the placenta which linked her to the baby and abandoned the baby inside the bush which subsequently led to the death of the baby.
“The baby was picked up by a good Nigerian who went to the bush to prepare her land for cultivation and found the girl through traces of blood dropping and alerted the Police because the baby was already dead.”
Favour pleaded for the court’s mercy, insisting that she was unable to care for herself and the child.
However, in his ruling, the presiding Magistrate, Oguoke Udeh said the case was beyond the jurisdiction of the Court, and ordered Favour to be remanded in Abakaliki Federal Prison, while the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) .
The case was adjourned to 2nd May 2017.
